Your Escape Blueprint

My Hometown! Boston…. No not Massachusetts!

Boston, Lincolnshire, England and yes my North American friends founded before “The Boston Tea Party” it is a farming community sitting as it does on reclaimed fenland, similar to what can be found across the Channel in Holland. It was occupied by the Romans at the height of their empire and we owe some of our raised roads and perfectly straight dykes to them.

It was strange being back somewhere so familiar and yet so different!

Dad still lives in the council house that we moved too when I was three years old,

The Council Houses

most of my younger siblings were born here. I remember coming home from school to be greeted by the midwife holding my squalling younger sister and being amazed at how tiny and perfect she was.

The house feels smaller……. Partly because my Mum is no longer there (she passed away a few years ago) and partly because I have grown used to the space we use in North America. Regardless it is home and always will be.

I grew up with my siblings on a council estate, the houses were all 3 bedroomed and built in blocks of 4, we had a middle house, neighbours to either side and a small hedged garden front and back. The neighbourhood has not really changed, just a few houses which were purchased from the Council and renovated in a variety of styles.

Saturday dawned overcast, in need of exercise we walked into town, landmarks

The Market

coming back to ne as we went. One of the biggest changes was the market; it no longer fills the town centre and overflows into the upper part of town. The main market is now a depleted shadow of its former self huddling into a small area in what I call the upper part. There are still marketers hustling their wares, not blankets, pot and pans but the fruit and vegetable stalls…….extorting us to buy “a bowl full for a pound” said “bowls” contain everything from parsnips to grapes!

Another big change came with the UK joining the EU; you hear a lot more than the Lincolnshire accent these days. The town has seen an influx of Portuguese who appear to have been recently replaced mostly by Polish with the occasional Hungarian thrown in. It lends itself to a much more cosmopolitan mix in this town dominated by its farming and small port.

We went out to see my sisters new place, new is relevant, new to her but built in the 18th century, it has been charmingly renovated and sits in its own little English garden surrounded by fields and lost down a tiny lane.  The local pub is a little easier to find, not by much….. and watch out for those Roman inspired dykes that run parallel to those narrow roads, the curse of those dark journeys home after a night of conviviality at the pub!

Our final day at home (for now) dawned bright and sunny! Mike was itching to

The Windmill

explore and very trigger happy as we strolled along the Witham snapping shots of anything that moved including the very unusual 5 sailed windmill that still operates today.

The Mill Houses

We ended our stroll in the town park snapping pictures of the “Stump” St. Botolph’s Church to be precise. The story goes that the money to build the church was mainly provided by the local wool merchants…….. when it came time to

The “Stump”

finish the Spire the money had “Dried” up, no graceful tower just a “stump”. I remember climbing all 365 steps to reach the top and peering down through the slatted wood floor at the big bells mounted below. A memory few can claim now as visitors are no longer allowed all the way to the top! It is well worth a visit if you ever visit the “original” Boston!

My hometown……. Yvonne

Safe and Sound!

After toasting our “Escape” at YVR we boarded our Boeing 777 on schedule, settled in to our cosy Air Canada seats and we were off!

Our route took us into night time and over the top of the world! We arrived ahead of schedule and then had to circle Heathrow in a holding pattern due to traffic congestion …….. plane traffic that is, it is a busy airport!

I have learnt from prior trips that clearing customs as a UK passport holder is a lot quicker than non- UK passport holders, what I also learnt is that the customs officers are very obliging and helpful when I bring my Canadian husband through with me. As long “as I can vouch for him of course”. Of all the places we have travelled I think the English customs are the friendliest or maybe it’s because a cheery smile goes a long way?

One bag!

Once through customs, it was down corridors, upstairs, more corridors and down more stairs to the baggage carousel…… my bag was out already and our second arrived after 10 mins…… Yeah!

Now to find our ride home! My Dad had volunteered to meet us at the airport with the help of a “Mate” of course as he doesn’t drive anymore. It was then that I realised I had not called him in the run up before leaving home……. Would he be there???

More narrow, twisty corridors and the final set of doors…… there he was with not one mate but two!

It has been over 4 years since I was home last and it was a shock to see my Dad, still my Dad but not quite the Dad I remember! Hugs all round and we were escorted out to the parking lot and loaded into a 7 seater “People Mover” we know them as Mini-vans……..

Our drive home took us first along the M25 with the vibrant green of budding trees and the yellow swathes of Rape seed growing in the rolling fields to either side. Cows grazed here and there with the odd flock of Black Sheep thrown in.

Once we were off the motorways, the more like home it became, winding narrow roads, brick houses jostling for space, tiny stone churches and of course pubs everywhere!!!!

We arrived home around 3pm….. home is where I spent my childhood, teenage and

Home is where the heart is!

some adult years. Home is where my family is and my family revolves around Dad, who always has an open door for his kids, no matter where they have been, how old they are or how many pals they bring home with them.

Dad had even stocked the fridge with the one thing we all crave when we come home……. Our famous local sausages, if you get the chance, try real Lincolnshire sausages, you will be hooked too!

Replete with sausages we staggered into bed around 8pm…….. 30 hours after we left our camp bed in Coquitlam.

More to come!

We Escaped!

Whew what a day! Rolling out of our camping bed this morning at 6am  it has been go, go, go!

Our bed was picked up last Tuesday, all our furniture is sold or donated and we have been camping in our house for the last few days!

I thought we were well prepared and our final sweep and clean up would be a breeze……. Wrong! It is amazing how much stuff we have accumulated…… you may have heard this before, it bears repeating though. Be prepared for that unexpected cupboard or two bulging at the hinges……..

In a matter of hours we cleaned out another 8 bags of garbage, recycling etc. Stuff we never knew we had……..

We also cleaned the entire kitchen, 3 bathrooms, swept floors, vacuumed etc. etc. End result,  one clean empty house, 2 packed bags and 2 tired, jubilant, smiling travellers!

The adventure begins……….. We have Escaped!

Tired but happy………. More to come!

Rising tension!

Two weeks before we fly out and the tension is rising!!!!

Our “To Do” list is growing and shrinking at the same time, as one thing is stroked off another one or two is added. It really is all in the details now; and there are a lot of details!!!

Both of us are experiencing highs and  lows, sometimes everything is rosy and other times tempers flare. Which is to be expected, sorting through your belongings and the associated memories they stir up is very intense and even disturbing……. going through a pile of old correspondence resurrected memories of my first marriage and the anger, pain, humiliation & despair that I experienced at that time. Leafing through old photo albums stirred memories of old friends, fun times and the realisation that we are doing the right thing and following our dreams.

Books are stacked in piles in the study as Mike goes through what is to be kept and what to be sold or donated. This is probably the toughest thing he has to do as he loves books, he loves the knowledge they contain. Some of them he has not yet read so it is painful for him to cull them.

Anxiety, fear and angst abound! Which adds up to a somewhat explosive environment right now…….. It also shows us how well we have learned to communicate, share our feelings, vent frustrations if needed and move on!

How to get the best deal on car rentals in Europe.

One of the biggest dilemmas for anyone is how to get around while in Europe. There is an extensive train system, which even with a Europass can be expensive, and you have to travel from main hub to main hub. This works well for many travelers, however with our style of slow travel we prefer to get away from these main hubs.

You may, like us have decided that you want to get off the beaten track and explore the countryside, seeking out quaint villages, vibrant country markets and secluded gîtes and pensiones to stay in. Doing that by train and bus would not be easy. That is why we started looking at ways of having a vehicle, there are three options, rent, buy or lease!

After a little research, it was quite clear that renting a vehicle in Europe is hellishly expensive, especially as many countries require that you take the full comprehensive insurance package. Having looked at some of the quotes we wondered if we were in fact renting as we could have bought a car for less.

There are also limitations on where you can drive your vehicle, if you want to visit Greece, Croatia or the eastern countries there are additional premiums. Both Greece and Croatia were on our wish list, so strike one to renting.

Next, we considered shipping our convertible to Europe, visions of driving with amongst sunshine flooded mountain vistas and snaking along winding roads through acres of grapevines, came crashing down when we realized that the expense to ship it would not be the end of the story. The dreaded red tape was a serpentine mess.  “How much will it cost to insure the vehicle, pay duties and get it checked for roadworthiness?” were questions which remain unanswered, despite multiple conversations with shipping companies, brokers and agents.

Why don’t we buy a car there? Australians and New Zealanders are very fond of doing this, there are large car auctions in many of the larger centers. There a few things to consider though, you still have to get insurance and what happens at the end of your trip? How easy is to sell your vehicle and will you be able to sell it?

Realistically we had only one option, a short-term lease! Two of the major manufacturers in France Renault and Citroen have a short-term lease or buy back program!

We arranged our lease with this company http://www.europebycarblog.com/ our dealings with Billy–who was helpful, informative and flexible—went extremely well. This service is available to North Americans only. Please note that they prefer that bookings be made a minimum of 45 days in advance.

For a lot less money than renting a car, we got a brand new Citroen C3, comprehensive coverage, 24-hour roadside assistance and the flexibility to take it to all those “forbidden” countries.  After our 3-month contract and 12,000 km we returned the vehicle as arranged, with nothing owing, despite a slight crack in a fender.

How is this possible? Brand new vehicles in France are subject to a 20% tax, by leasing it out to visitors for a minimum of 17 days, the companies can then sell these cars as used vehicles and avoid this hefty purchase deterrent.

We found this Reids Guides  article very useful when running rental versus leasing comparisons.

21 Days to Escape Day!

There is no turning back now! The renters move in on the 28th April and we arrive at  Heathrow Airport, England on the 27th!  This is when the fun really begins and all the work, stress and turmoil that we have been through these last few weeks, will all payoff!!!  For a while we were both permanently exhausted…. a combination of stress, lots to do and of course late nights.

Our trip to England is going to be a quick turnaround this time as we have to pick up our leased car in France on the 2nd May. Then we are going to take the scenic route to our house sitting place in Tuscany! Can’t wait!

After that we plan to do some more exploring, focusing on the countries that border the Mediterranean sea, who knows where we will end up? Spain, France, Croatia, Albania…….. ???

Watch this spot for more updates!

Seller Beware! Craigslist scams!

If you are in the process of downsizing, selling off ”the farm” and going exploring, you may be considering using Craigslist which is a free to use, multi regional online site.

Selling stuff on Craigslist can be very educational………..

There are people who are genuine, show up when they say they will and realise that you are asking  a fair price. To all of those thank you, you are awesome!

Then there are those who say they want whatever it is on offer and then don’t bother showing up. Hey we realise you might have found something else, which is great ……. a email or phone call to let us know would be even better!!!

Then there are the criminals! Yes criminals, they offer to buy your merchandise and pay for it through Pay Pal or a certified cheque and they will send a shipper to collect!!!!!! Whatever you do don’t agree! Everything should be handled locally and face to face, no matter how plausible the story!

We just had to share these 2 emails we got in response to us posting our car for sale! This is as they came, complete with typos and errors.

Hi there,

Thank you for getting back to me.Can you assure me that the merchandise is in good state and that i will not be disappointed with it and I’m ready to pay your asking price. To be honest, i wanted to buy this for my Dad and he is a mechanic, but the issue now is I’m a marine contractor and i just got a contract which i am doing presently and the contract is strictly no call,  due to the lack of reception on the sea area, But I’m able to access email anytime as we will make use of laptop so my only quickest payment option is PayPal as i can send money via PayPal anytime. Since I’m requesting this transaction to be done via PayPal, i will be responsible for all the pay pal fee/charges on this transaction and if you don’t have an account with PayPal, its pretty easy, safe and secured to open one. Just log on to www.paypal.com. I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? I have a mover that will come for it once payment clears and they will be handling the title for me.So i look forward to hear from you soon.

Craigslist includes this in every email response you receive for a very good reason

** CRAIGSLIST ADVISORY — AVOID SCAMS BY DEALING LOCALLY

** Avoid:  wiring money, cross-border deals, work-at-home

** Beware: cashier checks, money orders, escrow, shipping

** More Info:  http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams

We have come to the conclusion that sadly some people do get drawn into this type of scam ……..

Feel free to share this with those you care about, don’t let someone you love sell a expensive item this way, only to find that the certified cheque is a fake, a fake good enough for your bank to accept until they try to get the money from a non existent account or even bank.

Or get suckered into the Pay Pal scam & even E Bay, no matter how desperately you want to sell it…. you must be able to see “the whites of their eyes”. It is to us, a crime that a few scammers and fraud artists can taint our lives this way!
