Seller Beware! Craigslist scams!

If you are in the process of downsizing, selling off ”the farm” and going exploring, you may be considering using Craigslist which is a free to use, multi regional online site.

Selling stuff on Craigslist can be very educational………..

There are people who are genuine, show up when they say they will and realise that you are asking  a fair price. To all of those thank you, you are awesome!

Then there are those who say they want whatever it is on offer and then don’t bother showing up. Hey we realise you might have found something else, which is great ……. a email or phone call to let us know would be even better!!!

Then there are the criminals! Yes criminals, they offer to buy your merchandise and pay for it through Pay Pal or a certified cheque and they will send a shipper to collect!!!!!! Whatever you do don’t agree! Everything should be handled locally and face to face, no matter how plausible the story!

We just had to share these 2 emails we got in response to us posting our car for sale! This is as they came, complete with typos and errors.

Hi there,

Thank you for getting back to me.Can you assure me that the merchandise is in good state and that i will not be disappointed with it and I’m ready to pay your asking price. To be honest, i wanted to buy this for my Dad and he is a mechanic, but the issue now is I’m a marine contractor and i just got a contract which i am doing presently and the contract is strictly no call,  due to the lack of reception on the sea area, But I’m able to access email anytime as we will make use of laptop so my only quickest payment option is PayPal as i can send money via PayPal anytime. Since I’m requesting this transaction to be done via PayPal, i will be responsible for all the pay pal fee/charges on this transaction and if you don’t have an account with PayPal, its pretty easy, safe and secured to open one. Just log on to www.paypal.com. I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? I have a mover that will come for it once payment clears and they will be handling the title for me.So i look forward to hear from you soon.

Another one! I hate to think that sellers could be this gullible.

Great. am glad to read from you ,will appreciate more pictures… i am a Adventure Traveler, i am on mission at the moment and i will be back at the end of next month.I am buying this for my son, so am willing to offer you the amount you required, you have to understand,my work is important,I can only pay through PayPal at the moment as i don’t have access to my bank account online(i don’t have internet banking with it), but i have it attached to my PayPal account, and this is why i insisted on using PayPal to pay,i’ve decided to cover the PayPal 3% charges and you will get your exact asking price, all i will need is your PayPal email address to make the payments, and if you don’t have a PayPal account yet, you can set one up at www.paypal.com  it cant take you less than 3mins to do that, i will be expecting your PayPal email so l can pay and also get back to me with your best price on this. I have a pick up agent that will come for the pick up after payments has been sorted.

Craigslist includes this in every email response you receive for a very good reason

** Avoid:  wiring money, cross-border deals, work-at-home

** Beware: cashier checks, money orders, escrow, shipping

** More Info:  http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams

We have come to the conclusion that sadly some people do get drawn into this type of scam ……..

Feel free to share this with those you care about, don’t let someone you love sell a expensive item this way, only to find that the certified cheque is a fake, a fake good enough for your bank to accept until they try to get the money from a non existent account or even bank.

Or get suckered into the Pay Pal scam & even E Bay, no matter how desperately you want to sell it…. you must be able to see “the whites of their eyes”. It is to us, a crime that a few scammers and fraud artists can taint our lives this way!

    • Michael Bauche

Glad to hear they did not manage to pull it off!

  • This time he’s a military officer looking to purchase my truck as a “promise” gift for his girlfriend. I told him I would be glad to sell him the truck for my full asking price without him seeing it, but I wouldn’t release the title or vehicle until my money was out of my PayPal account and in my hand. He replied ok and that was that. What an a-hole. This guy should be caught.

This guy is a busy dude!

  • This same person tried doing the same thing to me. I haven’t released any info to him which is obviously a good thing. His email and texts are almost identical to the ones written above! When he sent me his name I decided to google it and I am sure glad I went wit my gut instinct!!! Thank you!
